How to Mentally Prepare for a Tennis Match
'Mental preparedness can be the most important thing you need to
do. Start with a sound conditioning and practice routine that allows you to
feel positive when facing your opponent.
- STEP 1: Begin to
prepare for the match three days in advance, if possible.
- STEP 2: Think about
your diet, sleeping habits and practice routines prior to the match so
your mind will be at ease.
- STEP 3: Prepare a
strategy according to your opponent, if possible. Incorporate your strategy
into your practices leading up to the match.
- STEP 4: Go into the
match with an attitude that you are going to stay out there as long as
it takes. Don't count on a quick win; be ready to go the distance.
- STEP 5: Visualize
yourself serving the ace and winning the match.
- STEP 6: Read or watch
motivational material.
- STEP 7: Keep a positive
attitude up until, and through the match.
Tips
- If you have a trainer
or coach, confer with him or her for mental pointers.
- Talk with other players
about techniques they use for mental preparedness.
