How to Mentally Prepare for a Tennis Match

'Mental preparedness can be the most important thing you need to do. Start with a sound conditioning and practice routine that allows you to feel positive when facing your opponent.

  • STEP 1: Begin to prepare for the match three days in advance, if possible.
  • STEP 2: Think about your diet, sleeping habits and practice routines prior to the match so your mind will be at ease.
  • STEP 3: Prepare a strategy according to your opponent, if possible. Incorporate your strategy into your practices leading up to the match.
  • STEP 4: Go into the match with an attitude that you are going to stay out there as long as it takes. Don't count on a quick win; be ready to go the distance.
  • STEP 5: Visualize yourself serving the ace and winning the match.
  • STEP 6: Read or watch motivational material.
  • STEP 7: Keep a positive attitude up until, and through the match.



  • If you have a trainer or coach, confer with him or her for mental pointers.
  • Talk with other players about techniques they use for mental preparedness.
