One problem many students encounter is when they bring a disk (flash drive, floppy or CD) from home, it often can not be used in the school's computers. This is because the software you might have at home is likely to be different than the software found at school. Luckily, there is an easy work-around.

Whenever you create a word processing document at home to bring to school, be sure to save in .rtf format. Any computer, any platform, and any word processing program can open .rtf files. The steps are listed below:

  1. Type, proofread, edit and spellcheck your document;
  2. Go to File/Save As;
  3. Pull down the window that corresponds to Save as Type;
  4. Choose Rich Text Format (.rtf);
  5. Name and save your document
